I’m sad to report I did not like the film. Yes, the cinematography was stunning and the cast did justice to their characters. However, for me, the filmmakers lost an opportunity to explore the supernatural/mystic implications of carrying a sacred relic around. Instead, it shifted tone to focus on the graphic violence that characterized the period, thus wasting the opportunity to give those talented actors a strong dramatic arc to show how the pilgrimage itself would impact them as human beings. For me, the characters came across as two-dimensional and stereotypical. This, of course, is not the fault of the actors themselves. Clearly, the director’s vision was not what I expected. The last scene left me particularly frustrated. Endings such as that one have always struck me as lazy writing.
Here’s a link to my first take on the film, after I saw it in NY. I don’t know if the typical viewer would be that interested in details about carry around a relic , but I agree that more time and money should have been spent on fleshing out historical aspects of the story, including religious aspects. As you can read, I completely agree about the ending. https://armitageagonistes.wordpress.com/2017/04/23/perrys-take-on-pilgrimage-with-later-spoiler-warning/
