New Projects? Was L.A. Productive for Richard Armitage?

Micra put this together: Two 2 new back to back Twitter Follows by @RCArmitage

And this article is in Italian ( for now)  and here’s a link to IMDB. Charlize Theron producing. and Chloë Grace Moretz starring.

Based on a memoir, The key doctor who helped the real life patient of a rare form of encephalitis. ( shades of Will Graham?) seems to be, based on his name, Arab, Southeast Asian or otherwise middle eastern. Could Richard Armitage play such a role? I think so.

  1. I hope the character isn’t supposed to be ethnic…I get annoyed when white actors get those parts. I won’t blame Richard but it does irk me….

  2. I agree with rashima/Grace above! I’d also hate for the producers to just change the role of the doctor to be a non-Asian character. Maybe (hopefully) there’s another male role in the story that he could possibly be up for instead?

  3. Richard doesn’t look Indian or Middle Eastern, and Indians don’t look like Middle Eastern, unless the actor is Ben Kingsley. LOL. It’s more likely that Richard will play someone other than the main doctor. Richard has played supporting roles before, as recent as in Pilgrimage. Maybe he will play another doctor, a hospital administrator, a patient, the father of a patient, etc. I am sure there are a lot of male characters in the movie.

  4. I’ve not read the book, but heard about it not long ago and was fascinated by the story. I would definitely enjoy seeing him in this film, in whatever capacity 🙂
And yes, great job putting that together, Micra! I saw those follows & was so excited about them. Charlize and Chloe would be fantastic ladies for him to work with, imho.

  5. I definitely get the point about using ethnic actors, especially when there are so many amazing Indian actors and actresses. It would be funny if Richard went from playing Dr. White (Hot 🙂 to another doc role in just over a year…..though certainly possible, I suppose.

  6. I hear and appreciate what you are all saying about the lack of diversity, casting Caucasian actors in ethnic roles and changing the race/nationality of the character altogether. Having said that, I think Richard Armitage *could* successfully play a middle eastern person ( maybe not an Asian or SE Asian). Just talking here about his ability and the magic of Hollywood – not whether it’s a good idea or causes the kind of unease you and others might feel, and which might blow back on him. Also, though the film might be interesting, I don’t think the role of a real life Dr. House is all that intriguing. Bottom line is that fascinating as the true story might be, it doesn’t sound all that great as a film.

    • He seems to be latching onto a number of projects that deal with mental illness / madness, either peripherally or squarely…. Thorin, Dolarhyde, potentially this one, Bridget Cleary…. even the Crucible, in a way. I think Sleepwalker may dance around that topic as well, it’s hard to tell at this point. Just intriguing as I’m sure not all performers have any interest in that sort of material….

      • Interesting point. I think he likes for his characters to have a “journey”, and mental illness or out-of-character irrational behavior offer this opportunity.

        • Yes, he definitely likes that sense of progression in a character, I agree with that! And of course it’s a challenge not many will take on, and I think he may like that too 🙂

  7. Predictably, I’m intrigued by an Irish connection again. What is it with RA and Ireland at the mo? But well, in this case the connection may also come through Charlize Theron – who had an Irish boyfriend for a while (actor Stuart Townsend). Thanks for digging this up – it’s always exciting to hear about potential new projects.

  8. It is an interesting story, but the interesting role to play would be the female lead. Still, always good to hear about potential new projects, though i would agree on the diversity issue, it would be a pity if they would change the original story in that respect. Maybe we’ll know more soon and maybe he could be somebody else close to the lead character, family member, lover? 😉
