DOS Box Office only 50 Million Away from One Billion Mark

Not chump change for sure.

The worldwide box office for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has reached over $944 million. This represents a 27%/ 73% split between the US and the rest of the world, the US taking $257,806 m and the rest of the world $686,400 m, as of March 16, 2014.

The Hobbit: DOS lies in 24 place in the top 100 All Time Worldwide Grosses according to Box Office MojoThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is in 17 place, having grossed $1,017 billion by the time the record closed on April 25, 2013. This time a year ago The Hobbit: AUJhad topped the billion dollar mark.

The third and final part of the trilogy The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be in US cinemas from December 17, 2014.

  1. It’s steadily climbing- I think $950 million would be a good result all round, or possibly a bit higher. DOS has done very well in China this year- $70 million so far ($50 mill for AUJ).

  2. It must be the dragon, especially when Smaug is designed to resemble Asian dragons a lot. When I read the Chinese viewers’ comments regarding Smaug, most of them (especially those who never read the book) complained that he talked too much, like an old granny.

    I doubt the box office number will go above one billion though. They will soon start selling DVDs so there will be new stream of income rolling in.
