Love, Love, Love – What Changes Do We Know?

Love, Love, Love is still in previews. From posts and comments I’ve read, including Twitter, fans who have seen it more than once report that Kenneth no longer jumps athletically over the sofa  in Act I ( damn – I wonder what happened? tumblr_mv2hgu1fjh1sk8d8ro5_250)

Word also has it that Kenneth now wears a cardigan in Act III, when he hadn’t in earlier performances.

I bet Richard Armitage tries to keep it. We’ll see it again.

What other changes do we know about? Anyone?

  1. It is a shame if he is not hopping over the couch in the opening minute because it is fun! The sweater is probably an attempt to age him. There is a point where he has his back to the audience at the very end and you can see back muscles through his shirt, which the sweater will probably hide.

  2. I’m going again tonight so will keep an eye out for the old man cardigan–he also had a tie on and his collar wasn’t unbuttoned in my shows so maybe we’ll see him loosen his collar as a trade off for hiding that lovely back/backside!

One big thing that was only in first preview night was the length of time he was alone in the apartment before Henry shows up was truncated in subsequent shows. He really took his time in the opening bit not just jumping on the sofa but also reaching out and stretching that lovely torso to grab his brandy snifter on the sideboard behind him without leaving the sofa–saw lots of skin as a result!

Also the act 3 pic above with him and Sandra on the sofa doesn’t have the urn in between them–it was there in my shows.

  3. I wonder now if the photographer took pictures at dress rehearsal–happy to report grandpa cardigan was nowhere in sight! Still black suit and black tie in Act 3. Also, no jumping on furniture in act 1–think that’s definitely gone. Also, in first preview he was more open about displaying his body to audience–now Kenneth still displays skin but it’s not turned as much to audience so more glimpses rather than full-on display. You can still see lots of chest, abs, nipples and the occasional belly button, never fear.

Lots of tears tonight from Rose and Jamie–really emotional performances from both. Even saw Sandra with tears in Act 3 at one point.

Also, was finally able to see the line caused by hair piece in act 1 on forehead so it’s definitely a wig!

    • I didn’t see much of his chest in Act I. I had the impression he (i.e., Richard) was intentionally hiding it, but how you experience it also probably depends a lot on where your seat is located. Kenneth clearly wants Sandra to see his chest, but he is awkward about it.

Thank goodness the grandpa sweater is missing! Also, more tears would be quite interesting — Rose was hysterically crying in Act II, but it didn’t seem convincing to me. Was she also tearful in Act III? When did Jamie have tears? During the opening scene of Act III, or later when he takes off his shirt and walks off the stage?

How many times have you seen it so far?

On the emotions–Jamie had a near breakdown at the end of act 2 in the show I saw last night–the anguish was clear on his face and in his body. Before he seemed distraught but almost in a state of shock, just desperate to drown out the noise of the screaming and wanting to lose himself in the music, more fearful, but last night it almost seemed that he somehow knew what Rose had done.

Rose was still hysterically crying in Act 2, it was Act 3 that had more this time. She got visibly teary and sniffly, and maybe Zoe had a cold or it could have been makeup but her nose was really red in Act 3 which made it all seem real.

What surprised me was that Sandra also got teary in Act 3–there was a point at which her eyes were glassy even through the lens of her eye glasses. This was the first time I noticed Sandra getting teary, she was more angry in her upset before. This is all from row C again, this time from the right side, seat 2.

Last night was #4 for me.

  4. For the first preview I was in the middle seat of row C on the left–he was standing practically in front of me on that side when he stretched and the robe parted to display his entire body and I was dazzled by the sight. 🙂 This was before Sandra arrived so he was preening for himself and Henry (and for the audience of course!). Too bad they decided to take it out–it definitely made him seem more confident and less awkward.

There’s a moment now when Henry is berating Ken for not telling their parents that he’s in London that Ken sulks and sits on the floor–my memory is hazy but I’m not sure that happened during 1st preview–it certainly makes Ken seem more juvenile by comparison.

    • MORE SPOILER: I can’t remember Kenneth sitting on the floor, but I do recall he seemed cowed and boyish during the conversation about his parents, especially towards Henry when Henry said something like: “I told them Kenneth doesn’t tell me anything.”

I was sitting in Row M slightly to the left of the middle, far back enough and at an angle that I might have missed quick glimpses, but I am sure that Kenneth never showed his full chest. I don’t think the audience is supposed to realize Kenneth has a muscular, manly chest in Act I.

They used the device of hiding Ben/Jamie’s chest in Act II and showing it in Act III, so that it is clear he is now a man. I thought Richard was doing the same thing in Act I — in the other two acts Richard is more manly in the way he moves and carries himself.

  5. maybe they just hadn’t finished knitting the thing 🙂 but i just don’t think Sandra would go for a man in that kind of gear 🙂 Ie if she’d found him that grampsy looking, that’s not the vibe i got from the play, so maybe that’s why they ditched it .

    • Suit in Act III? In the script, he was suposed to be wearing whit flannel pants, and I was looking forward to them. I’ve known for a while that he wars something else, but I didn’t think it was a suit.
