The pic on the right (the close up in the mirror) if of Ralph Fiennes from Red Dragon. Dollarhyde wore the mask when working out and when he was out “changing” families. It’s in the book as well. Good point about the scar being visible, but I think he didn’t plan on leaving any witnesses alive.
As others have commented, this is a similar mask to that worn in Manhunter – but I think that in the Manhunter case it was a stocking, Even then, why leave the scar visible?
In Manhunter, it looks like a regular stocking mask ( very popular with criminals until ski masks replaced them. Even there, though, the scar is visible.
I have lent my copy of Red Dragon to my daughter but I thought he did wear a mask when working out.

I think it’s a reference and a homage to Manhunter, Noonan was wearing something similar.

That’s just what I thought when I watched it last night.
Here are a couple of pics of Tom Noonan wearing the mask.

Yes, it makes no sense. But then again – like all killers, this one seems to want to be caught, so it is a deliberate clue?

In the book, is vital for Dolarhyde to show his scar and his teeth, he doesn’t give a f about showing it because no one will survive.

creepy but in terms of visuals a slightly better choice than what the others wore 😉
