  1. Holy moly, has no one yet noticed THIS comment by Fuller?

“There’s been an influx of romantic story lines in this season , particularly with Francis Dolarhyde and Reba McClane, which we get to see sexually and sensually and psychologically, and what these two people mean to each other, and their sex scene is beautiful and healthy (given the circumstances) and celebratory of two people divided coming together in a unique connection that makes you feel for both of those people, it is a celebration of what sex is supposed to be, which is a merging of two into one, or however many, if you’re a three, but it’s about connection and it’s about intimacy and the visual side of the storytelling really enhances that.”

RA doing a sexy sex scene with a “visual side?!” More than a chaste kiss with a fully clothed Victorian or a bored roll in the hay with an “American” with a horrible accent? Finally! I can’t wait!!!

      • I was one of the “recalcitrant” fan, even though it was recommended to me by many friends before. I just didn’t think I would enjoy the genre. Upon hearing Richard’s role in the show I knew I couldn’t avoid it anymore. I forced myself to watch it, but ended up really loving the show. The “gross” factor is really grossly exaggerated in my opinion. My 80 year old mom had no trouble binge watching w/ me during meals.

  2. Wow, I was starting to feel lukewarm about this role after the initial excitement but now the heat has turned up again. RA in real intense love scene is something I’ve been waiting for a long time.

    • Yup. Sounds shallow, but It’s something I’m looking forward to. Bryan Fuller sure know hows to sell Richard Armitage. I was actually surprised that such a detailed description of a love scene (not graphic, but still detailed) made its way into an interview. He knows his audience.

  3. I get the sense that Fuller and whoever runs the De Laurentis twitter account and others associated with Hannibal are selling specifically to fans of Richard. And not just Richard’s fans — Fuller is doing the same with Gillian and Mads in this and other recent interviews.

I have wondered about the accent because I thought his American accent in ITS sounded very forced. But I hated that film, so I hope this time it will be different.

  4. “Richard imbues him with great power and also tremendous vulnerability and it’s incredibly appealing”… exactly why I’ve been so excited about this role since reading the novel. The character is so compelling and has such a tragic arc, more than just his backstory, it’s how you find yourself on the cusp of believing that his path with Reba might somehow make things right even though you know he’s beyond redemption. This was a great interview. And nice of Fuller to give such an interview to/for the Fannibals.

  5. I really like the way he speaks about R 🙂 not that any of what he says is really news at all 😉 I’m glad between R and him they decided to play out the details of the character and looking forward to the interaction with Reba. As to the love scenes they better do better than they have done so far. But if you read the full interview and things he’s been asked to darken erase and from what I’ve seen in the show it’s essentially from the shoulders above shooting so let’s hope for loving facial expressions which we are more likely to get

    • I just finished rewatching what I can only describe as a double love scene (and then a three-way) very confusing for me, especially since both woman looked alike to me) ( S 2 Ep 10 or 11 – in preparation to write something on it). Anyway – you are quite right. Everything is very close up, but above the shoulders. I wonder what they’ll do with the black blood in the moonlight scene – which is so important to the story, and which we heard was filmed. I imagine it may be in silhouette. U.S. network television has actually pulled back on nudity, although, according to a recent survey I read, they’ve increased the actual number of sex scenes. Go figure.

  6. Interesting that Lee Pace was an early contender for the FD role. Again we have mention of RA’s characterisation journals – wouldn’t it be fabulous if he compiled all his journals in to one book ? What a read! ‘I hope some recalcitrant fans, uncomfortable with the genre, will come around.’ I must admit this interview has piqued my curiosity. I believe Hannibal 3 starts here in the UK on June 10th so I MIGHT record it but wait till I hear what others make of it, then decide whether to watch. The gore factor still disturbs me but I’m getting desperate to see RA in something new!

    • Many fans have written that Lee Pace was first considered for the role, and some have suggested that it was through Lee Pace that RA came to Fuller’s attention, but until this article, I never heard Bryan Fuller say anything more than that he was hoping to use Lee Pace in Hannibal, but the timing didn’t work. While I think Fuller was being honest about his casting here, I question whether he was pandering to fans by going into such detail, same as I think he was pandering to fans by giving so much detail about the romantic scenes, RA’s body and so forth. Maybe pandering is an unfair word. Whatever he was doing, it worked. I guess Dolarhyde would have been the obvious choice of a role for Lee Pace – but I think Richard Armitage is perfect for it, and apparently, so does Bryan Fuller, if maybe after the fact.
There is some gore, but I find that part of it no more disturbing than other crime shows these days. Recording, if you’re squeamish, is a good option. Here’s what I do when I think anything is going to bother me, but I want to watch anyway: I fast forward through the part, but I do look. Then I go back and watch that part again. My issue is not with gore, but with suspense, so by fast forwarding, that nerve-wracking, edge of the seat, thing is ameliorated, and the second time around, I know what happens, so I don’t jump off the sofa. ( I know one might ask why watch at all? – but sometimes the rest of the show or movie is worth it to me). Knowing the Dolarhyde story, unless they really change his M.O., I don’t think I’m going to have any problem with those scenes. It’s often the aftermath in Hannibal that is worse – that is, when Will Graham inspects and envisions the crime scene. In those cases, we usually don’t see the actual murderer commit the acts, if we see anything at all, we see Will Graham committing the acts. Anyway – record it, what do you have to lose? You can always choose not to watch – but if I were a betting woman . . .

      • B.Fuller surely knows how to sell a product, LOL, but actually he did not say anything new for the fans, maybe he just flew over the detail that, being Lee Pace’s availability not sure from the beginning, they had already prepared a short list of other professionals to be entrusted with the role, including Richard (and not only him, I’m sure, but he is the best, so… 😉 ).
Perhaps Fuller could not know that R.A. would have been so perfect from the start, as you said, but the sure knew with reasonably certainity that he would have been very close to it, or he would not have considered him.
        (sorry for my english)

        • Welcome to the blog. Your English is fine. Never worry about it here. I agree, Fuller seems to be a master promoter, honing in to his relevant fandoms.

  7. Bryan Fuller is honestly one of my favourite people, ever. Fantastic interview, thank you.

As for the “pandering”, he’s always been like that with Hannibal. It’s his way of selling the show. Kind of fighting the infamous “Fuller curse’ (shows being cancelled WAY before their time) by being as open and involved in the fandom/with fans as he can. He knows us, he knows what we want.

I think Rich will be bloody (heh) amazing as Dolarhyde. As much as I love Lee, I can’t imagine him in that role. There’s just something too cute about him (he will always be Ned from Pushing Daisies to me) and it makes it impossible for me to see him as Francis.

      • i can totally imagine Lee as FD, Fiennes or the one previously (sorry names escapes me) were equally ‘innocent looking’ 😉 If anything RA is an intrinsicly more menacing physical presence. However, it doesn’t matter 🙂 It is what will go on on screen that matters and that he ended up being the perfect combination of insanity and vulnerability (which i could stick my hand in the fire Fuller knew if he watched the Hobbit and i am sure he did :-)). He’s a very smart cookie and he knows the needs the audience to get the show renewed. New fans are very welcome 🙂 I am pretty sure he meant what he said about liking RA’s work (i am sure there is theoretical choice he could have had but he deliberately chose RA in spite of RA not being involved with shows across the pond and not being even close to this show in particular as he himself admitted etc). What he says about training and background is very interesting and i am guessing he is talking from experience.
I am sure on top of the acting credentials and dedication he had no objections to his looks ;-)) And he very well knows that his looks are also important to his fans so he pushes the buttons expertly 🙂 It is not as if anyone on that show is anything else than good-looking and i am sure that is deliberate 🙂
I like their marketing and his talking about his show almost more than i like the show itself LOL; he can sell but it is intelligent and alluring rather than pushy 🙂
