I’m gutted for RA because I really thought he was a dead cert for this award. Of course I’m biased & I didn’t see any of the other actors’ performances.
I know of Mark Strong because of Richard. Found Robin Hood BBC to watch more RCA –> decided to watch ALL Robin Hood movies and compare interpretations -> Mark Strong is in the Ridley Scott version. Just saw it last weekend. Serendipity.
I could have accepted any of the other contenders, but not MS and I have seen A view from the bridge and i am glad I switched off after it won best revival over TC poor Yael in the audience looked sad. TC was ten times better than AVFTB.
“I really wasn’t expecting this. I’m in such a strong category with such incredible actors,” Strong said on stage at the Royal Opera House, offering a nod to fellow nominees James McAvoy, Richard Armitage and Tim Piggot-Smith.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last month, Strong revealed that A View From the Bridge could be moving from London’s Young Vic Theater to Broadway later this year. Alongside best actor, the production of the Arthur Miller drama also won for best play revival and director, Ivo Van Hove. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/uks-olivier-awards-mark-strong-788065
I think all the male nominees were judged as equal in worth, but AVFTB needed the solidarity of the artists class – i.e. the support of an award – for a boost on Broadway. And we know that TC could not be transfered to NYC.
A different way to look at it is that the voters liked AVFTB better than TC, as evidenced by the Best Revival win as well. I know it is a cliche to say it is an honor to be nominated, but it nevertheless is true. All the press I’ve seen thought that it was too close to call, which was not the case for some of the other awards.

If you thought he was a dead cert, I think you were in the minority. It was billed as a very close contest all along.

Those things happen. I caught him this weekend in The Imitation Game.

It all seems clear to me:
