@OlivierAwards due to my filming schedule in Toronto, I am unable to get to London on Sunday. My sincere apologies.

@OlivierAwards I'd like to wish all the nominees the best of luck, I hope you all have a fantastic evening. Much love Richard x

Yes. I would imagine he feels pretty bad about it. I can’t help but feel I’d always have regrets about that, if I were in his shoes.

i know.. big sigh here too, i am probably sadder about it than he is, but i think this was important for him too. I’ve only myself to blame for investing in the whole idea a bit too much, but it was fun and either way the nomination is wonderful (which i will keep reminding myself of too). Too bad really the work schedule has ended up this way…

I’m glad he announced one way or the other, because fans, like Yve, for example, might have made a wasted trip and been disappointed. I feel gutted.

yes i’m juts about to tell my 2 close friends in London about it as i begged and pleaded with them until they agreed to go for me and tell me all about it and text me; need to call the troops off… siigh, so sad really ..what do i do with all the pride and stuff i wanted to feel about it? Need to find the official announcement of the ceremony and see if i can at least chop the relevant bits out as souvenirs of it..

thank you 🙂 i know, i am unable to be online at the moment during the day (family chaos situation) but i will check in when back in London next week. And i will probably be up at night when i can trolling through the twitter feed 😉 I’ve left it all to record so i can watch at least when they say his name as nominated (is that crazy or what? ;-))

Poor guy. I would think it would be good PR for Hannibal to have him on the red carpet at a major award event, especially if he were to win, but I guess it would cost buckets of money to delay filming for a couple of days while he was gone. Too bad. I understood why the Empire Awards weren’t worth the trip, but this is different.

I agree. RA attending the Olivier Awards would definitely be good PR for any project that he might be currently working on. And this is a moment of a career lifetime for him as a nominee–hopefully one of many to come.
But are RA’s current employer’s seriously not letting him off a couple of days to attend the most prestigious award ceremony of his career and life to date–with RA as a nominee for Best Actor? *shakes head in disbelief*

We don’t really know whether he decided it was impossible or one of his employers did.

Yes, that was my question. Ha!

As someone else pointed out, it might not actually be the Hannibal shoot that’s interfering.

Although we may find out later that it was Hannibal work. For ex: If another tweet or on set pic shows up. They may keep radio silence for a while.

Looking on the bright side, now that I know he is not attending, I will not have to try and watch them. I appreciate that he let us know in advance and I wish all the nominees best of luck, but I can skip it without regrets.

I don’t usually comment on blogs, but I am jumping in here because I suspect there is more to the situation than Hannibal not letting him take the time off. If my math is correct, he should be headed to the Pilgrimage (sp?) set next week. If the Hannibal shoot is behind schedule and it seems that it is, then there is likely some scrambling involved to get it done so he can move on to his next project. Sucks, but there it is.

Welcome. It’s possible, since he was not specific about his “shooting schedule.”

You all are correct to point this out. Although the tweet explicitly mentions his Hannibal filming schedule in Toronto, he is also boxed in on the other end by Pilgrimage. I imagine he knew about Pilgrimage before Hannibal (or at least that is the order we learned about them) so that he could arrange in his contract to be done with Hannibal in time. But he did not know about the Olivier nomination, and he just may not have any give in his schedule due to Hannibal going late. If Hannibal episodes are filmed in order, since he is in the season finale, he’ll probably need to be there to the bitter end.

Perry’s earlier post about recruiting extras for Pilgrimage noted that filming started this Monday, April 13. Hard to know exactly when he was due on set, but I agree with Kim that his original plan was likely to go from London directly to Ireland. I’m more heartbroken for him than for fans. There will always be other appearances, but I have to believe this is one time when he might have let himself enjoy the glory a bit, and who could blame him. At the end of the day he’s a pro and will take it in stride, but to be expecting to go and then not be able to must have been disappointing.

It’s not the first time that an actor misses an awards ceremony, and not the last. And it’s not the first time that an actor would be rewarded, even though he’s not present. I don’t think he needs this kind of event to boost his career, producers are more interested in his artistic talents and his capacity to fill the movie theatres and theatres. Let us not be despondent, take heart !

Whatever the reason(s) for him not being able to attend I’m still very sad for him. Such an amazing honour. It would be fantastic if he won. To my mind he deserves to, even though he must be proud simply to be nominated.

I was certain he was going to attend. I can only hope he’s not too disappointed by not being able to come. He once did say that he disliked red-carpet venues, so…
