Best excuse I have heard so far is that if you stretch it a bit you could say it’s rainbow coloured. Big stretch, but then I am sure it is stretchy material. 😉
If it’s intended as a commentary on Russia’s anti-gay attitude, I would have hoped they’d find a way that was more subtle and less ridiculous to gay people… Just saying, most gay people I know wouldn’t be caught dead in those outfits, Olympic or not.
Ralph Lauren did the right thing: He asked an 8-year-old from the EU to design the US Olympic outfit and she threw in all the American stereotypes she’d seen on telly 😉 Ralph too believes that children are our future LOL!
Yes, I think the fit and style are nice. Overall, it’s a bit plain for the Olympics. However “I” would be very proud to wear that in black to the gym, myself.
I’m sorry, but that’s ridiculous, too. I could live with the coat – just barely, but the pants?? I guess there *is* a move to incorporate rainbow colors. Whatever happened to a nice logo?
Nope, my comment and also the comments I read were about the uniforms being some sort of silent protest against the anti-gay murmurs that are overshadowing the Games.
I really like the Polish uniform. The more I look at it, the more Ilke it – it has nice detail – maybe a quilted pattern – on the jacket. And I like the white/ light gray snow bunny look.
German team looks like their in pajamas, Italian is classic but a bit boring, I think Sheldon Cooper might have designed the Norway ones 😛 so my pick is Poland! (do people regularly joke that polar bears are from Poland? I’ve never heard that 😕 ) but then again, I’m one of the few who actually like Richard’s sweater, so…
Ralph really got busy with the ‘stars and stripes’ theme, didn’t he?- with emphasis on the word ‘busy’!
Couldn’t find any images for the Australian one- some variant of our usual green and gold no doubt. Not really our strong suit, the Winter Olympics for some reason….
And the first medal for the 2014 Winter Olympics goes to … Poland (so far!). 🙂 Classy and tasteful, polar bears or not. I am sure we can find one or two if we look long enough.
Haven’t read the replies yet, but this photo of RA always throws me. Not because I don’t like the sweater but the greenery in the background. Dumb move by the photographer.
Exactly, every time I learn something new. And notice things I totally overlooked before (not only because I focus on Mr.A. but because I don’t usually notice the details).
I should amend my last statement. I don’t really know this designer. He’s a friend of a friend whom I’ve talked to at some dinner parties. He’s said how very bored he and the other designers get. Every time I look at this sweater, I think of his statements.
First impression: WT@#$% ?; Second the impression: Is there a variant of, oh IDK, Mad Cow (or something) that is only striking the designers of the world? (If so, where can I contribute to help it end this fashion disaster ASAP?) OK, I get the message/context, but why punish the athletes, viewers & countries w/equivalent of bridesmaid’s dress chosen by insecure & vindictive bridezilla? (long sigh) “Classic, understated” look @ Olympics is apparently going to be the shiny (clashing) Day-Glo spandex bodysuits worn by (Jamaican?) bobsledders in the ’80s… Can’t. Hardly. Wait.
We had a ugly Christmas sweater day at school before the break, all because of the commercial. Are the Olympics trying to do there own take on it? As I said up in the comments, love the Polish ones.
LOL

I would choose the Armani over the Ralph – but it’s not really that inspired. Great fit, though.

I think it’s a great way to announce your displeasure with the anti-gay sentiment. (Rainbow). I love it. I think they are beautiful.

I didn’t think of that at all because I was focusing on the rainbow colors of the Olympic Rings.

There are like 200 nations in the Olympics – where are the rest of the uniforms? Jamaica, Chile, have we seen GB? We need to weigh in.

The US uniform is quite the amalgam of design. Perhaps he couldn’t decide and used all of his ideas?
But the main thing for the athletes out in the freezing cold is–will it keep me warm? Let’s hope it does that, sartorial issues aside. Ha!

They usually wear these just for the opening and closing ceremonies, which are indoors. Otherwise, they wear their competition uniforms.
